Formation Process Of A Pearl

By Sandra Sullivan

For over many years that passed the pearls, very extraordinary gems, were considered as one of the most beautiful treasures that can be found on the seabed and on oysters. It was used as jewelry for women, people created a way for it to be a part of fashion. Before it becomes a Hawaiian Pearl Jewelry, take a look at how this beautiful thing was formed.

What comprises a pearl is an estimated of 100% conchiolin and calcium carbonate. People refer the way a natural type is made to be incidental. Because the process starts from a single microscopic parasite who wants to invade the shell.

Such parasite is named as the irritant. This irritant will make a way to invade any oyster that it sees. Once it is already inside the oyster will defensively response to the invader, creating a fluid that would cover and trap the invader. The coating consists of both calcium carbonate and conchiolin, which are essential in creating such a gem.

When this process is repeatedly done by the same mollusk, along the way a nacre or pearl will be made. The estimated time for this procedure could take up to more than three years. It could form into several shapes, and the most spherical one, which what most jewelry makers use, is considered the rarest.

A cultural type of pearl is created through a reaction between the implantation of a tissue, known as a graft, inside a shell. This requires two oysters, the one will donate the tissue and the other is the one that will receive it. As soon as the tissue is placed inside, a small sack made up of essential calcium is being developed. Once this gets bigger, a nacre will be formed.

There have been many methods used in producing a cultured one. It could either be using shells from freshwater or seawater, transplanting the tissue into the shell, or adding a round bead as a nucleus. Unlike the natural type, this is made both by human and also natural occurrences.

Another way in making pearls is through imitating a real one. The steps are easy and can be done in no time. Al you have to do is to dip a round glass bead into a solution that contains scales from fish. This type differs in the weight since it is not made of calcium, and the color could be easily worn off.

Imitation pearl, on the other hand, is formed differently from the other two. This is not done through a long process. Most likely referred to as the fake type of bead. But, you can easily determine if one is fake when you rub it across your teeth, if it glides, then it truly is a fake one.

Forming a real single pearl could take years before divers get it and jewelry makers use it as part of the jewels they are making. Even in the long procedure, a beautiful thing will be put into existence. So if you have any of this special gem, take good care of it because it was made in an extraordinary way.
