A Guide To Dating Muslims For Ladies

By Jerry Murphy

Christianity is the most followed faith around the world with Islam the second largest. Unfortunately, a few extremists mean there is now an association with terrorists but nearly all followers want peace and a normal life. The Koran teaches that people should be charitable and help others. If you are not familiar with Islam and its teachings, dating muslims might be very different from your usual dates.

Prayer is a big part of Islam and strict followers will pray five times a day. If it is not possible to get to a mosque then a quiet corner to spread a prayer mat is acceptable. In Muslim countries it is not unusual to see men praying in public places during prayer times. If the man you are on a date with suddenly excuses himself and is gone longer than a restroom break, it maybe he is quietly praying somewhere.

While Christians go to church on Sundays, Friday is the holy day for followers of Islam. Like most Christians who only go to church o Sundays, most people will go to the mosque on a Friday. Islam has many other special days and feasts where it is normal to go to mosque. These do not always coincide with regular holidays so do not be surprised if your date is busy when you feel he should be with you.

When choosing a restaurant for an evening out, you will need to remember that strict followers do not eat pork and may not want to eat anywhere it is served. Any meat will need to be halal and not prepared near pork products. There are places which cater to the Islamic diet so you should be able to find a restaurant where you can both enjoy the food.

According to the Koran, Muslim women to be modestly dressed. This means short skirts and revealing tops might cause offense. It is okay to be attractive but attracting the gaze of other men in the room is normally frowned upon. You do not need to go and buy a veil and long black dress but do think about what may be considered too revealing.

Should marriage be your long term goal, bear in mind that it is normal for women to convert to their husband's religion in order to marry. Converting to Islam might not be something you would ever consider, so make sure you know if that is likely to be required. Even the most passionate love might not be enough to change your mind about your God.

There are still Islamic countries around the world where it is normal for a man to have up to four wives. He must treat each wife equally, but you might not want to share your husband so make sure this possibility is talked about as the relationship goes on. You could even find your date is married already and is seeking wife number two or three.

It is part of the Muslim culture that the man is the provider and takes care of the family. They are kind and loving to their children and wish to protect their family. Men who were born and raised in Islamic countries are more likely to adhere strictly to the teachings of the Koran. Those born and raised in multi-cultural societies and are well educated are much more likely to be liberal and have more 'western' ways.
