Maui Weddings: Keeping Your Guests Busy & Happy

By Ella Hemmings

Keeping guests happy and entertained at a typical wedding usually only requires planning a great reception and perhaps a rehearsal dinner the night before. When you opt for a wedding in a destination such as Maui, while you usually have fewer guests, they typically stay for several days. So it's wise to provide some information about local excursions and activities that your guests might enjoy.

Consider providing each guest with a Maui goodie bag. In a beach tote, pack sunscreen, bottled water and some non-perishable snacks. You can also include a packet filled with local information, such as great places to eat, a great place for a sunset cocktail, fun day trips and practical information about where to find a drug store or grocery store and taxi services. Include an itinerary that helps guests know when scheduled events are to take place. This might include a rehearsal dinner, as well as the ceremony time and location, the reception time and location, and any other group events.

Many people love coming to Maui and simply basking in the sun and playing in the ocean, but for people who have never been to the island, you might want to provide some assistance and directions. Provide a list of nearby beaches and how to get there as well as some information about each of the beaches. Maui has plenty of amazing options, but you probably just need to list three or four. If everyone is staying at a resort or large hotel, there probably will be beach access and definitely at least one swimming pool, and most hotels provide towels for their guests.

One great excursion to consider is driving down the road to Hana, a picturesque village that rests at the edge of curvy road that features unbelievable scenery and 54 one-lane bridges. The journey is only about 60 miles in all, but it definitely takes at least eight hours. The windy roads require slow speeds, plus you have many interesting places to stop along the way, such as at waterfalls and amazing beaches. There are several tour companies that provide guided tours as well as continental breakfasts and lunch service. This is important because there is no food along the way to Hana, so you have to bring what you need.

Sometimes guests might prefer a shorter excursion, and there are plenty of other options to consider. Whale-watching cruises are very popular, and you are pretty much guaranteed to see quite a few whales as well as enjoy a view of the island from the sea. Kayaking adventures, surfing lessons or even horseback riding are a few of the many other activities that are available in Maui.
